Theory: Food and Music Analogies

Food and Music Analogies

  • Cook as composer (when he or she creates a new dish)
  • Cook as performer (when he or she interprets a recipe)
  • Cook as conductor, playing with diverse tastes and flavors
  • Recipe as score
  • Eating and listening music are non-verbal experiences
  • The pleasure of eating and of listening to the music exists only when it is ate or performed
  • It cannot be repeated
  • Both are a shared experiences:
    • between cook and diner
    • between composer/performer and listener
  • Both involve emotions: happiness, fear, anger, sadness, love, etc.
